Sharifa Karim Maswood

Sharifa Karim Maswood, also known as Shefali, was born in Kolkata, India in 1936 to Kaneez Batul and Fazlur Karim. She migrated to Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1949 where she completed high school at Holy Cross College, and later received a Masters in Political Science at Dhaka University. She began her teaching career at Holy Cross Girls College in Dhaka, and went on to become a professor of Social Sciences at Dhaka Tejgaon College.  She lived an active life and dedicated time to her community, founding an NGO to support war-affected women in Bangladesh, serving on the Dhaka University Senate, and caring for her family, neighbors, and friends. She migrated to the United States in 1992 to join her children and grandchildren, and there became the heart of her immediate and extended family. Sharifa was curious and funny, deeply spiritual, and a source of moral strength and encouragement to all who knew her. She lived her last days in Berlin, CT, close to her children and grandchildren, and left this world with them close by. Her loss leaves a space that can never be filled. We pray for her reunion with her youngest son, Syed Imran Maswood, and her siblings in the next life.
