Sebastiana “Nuccia” (Amodio) Pellegrino, age 85, beloved widow of Giuseppe “Joe” Pellegrino of Manchester, Connecticut passed away on May 16th, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family, after a long fight with pulmonary fibrosis despite having never smoked.
She was born January 3rd, 1938, in Palazzolo Acreide, in the Province of Syracusa, Sicily to the late Paolo Amodio and Angela Mortellaro Amodio. She was an embroidery apprentice and graduated from a rural school where she received the equivalent of a high school education. Moving to Connecticut at age 18 by ship with her parents, she briefly returned to Italy to marry Giuseppe in 1956 in their hometown in Sicily. The two settled in Hartford, Connecticut.
Nuccia was employed by The Travelers Insurance Company. She was a parishioner of St. James Church in Manchester, Connecticut. She was a loving mother and wife, devoted to her family and friends, always cooking, giving advice, always making you laugh. She had an amazing voice and was an incredible singer. She was always available for anything you needed and enjoyed singing in church. Nuccia made beautiful, intricate, handmade greeting cards, and spent most of her time caring for her family and her home, which was always immaculate. She was the heart and soul of the Pellegrino family and will always be most remembered for her loving and giving heart, artistic nature, emphatic expressions, compelling real-world opinions, and incredible cooking.
Nuccia will be dearly missed by her daughter, Elena Sherwood, who cared for her around the clock for the last two years, her grand daughter, Jennifer Sherwood; her son, Carmelo (Carmine) Pellegrino; his wife, Holly Pellegrino, and their children, Deanna and Joseph Pellegrino; as well as many family members in Italy, many neighbors and many dear friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Giuseppe Pellegrino, 82, who passed away September 21st, 2014.
Friends and relatives are welcome to join the family for calling hours on May 22nd, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 pm at Manchester Funeral Home, 142 E. Center Street, Manchester CT. Sebastiana's funeral mass will be held on May 23rd, at St. James Church, 896 Main St., Manchester CT, beginning at 11:00 AM. Please meet the family directly at the church.
