Manuel M. "Jody" Mendes Jr.

Manuel M. “Jody” Mendes Jr., 89, of Manchester, beloved husband to Frances “Peggy” Mendes passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019.  He was born in New Bedford, MA, on February 2, 1929, to the late Manuel Sr. and Maria (Elias) Mendes.

After serving in the US Air Force, Jody married and worked for the railroad while earning his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at the University of Hartford.  He was then employed by United Technologies as a senior research engineer for the remainder of his career.  Jody loved spending time outdoors tending his garden or going for walks and was an avid tennis player.  He also enjoyed playing bridge and ballroom dancing with his wife.

In addition to his wife, Jody is survived by his daughter Karen Mendes and her spouse Michael Moyer, his daughter-in-law Karen Ann Mendes and grandson Ryan Mendes, two sisters Dolores Vieira and Elsie Lima, and several nieces and nephews. Jody was predeceased by his son Steven “Dok” Mendes, two sisters and one brother.

A time of visitation for Jody will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 3-4 p.m. with a service to begin at 4 p.m. at Manchester Funeral Home, 142 East Center St, Manchester.  Burial will be held in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Executive Blvd, Southington, CT 06489-1058.  To leave an online message of condolence for his family, please visit www.manchesterfh.com
