John J. Ganly, 69, of Manchester, CT passed away peacefully at Manchester Memorial Hospital, CT on August 21, 2023.
John was the only child of the late John J. Ganly, Sr., and Margaret E. Hopkins Ganly, both of whom immigrated from Ireland and became US citizens. He grew up in Hartford, CT and attended South Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1972. In his youth he developed lifelong friends from his love of hockey, building model rockets, reading and history. He worked briefly at American Optical and Colt Firearms before finding his calling in Police work after moving to Manchester in 1984.
After attending the Police Academy, John advanced through the East Hartford Police Department ranks, retiring as Sergeant after 25 years of service. He then continued serving the East Hartford Community for additional years as Animal Control Officer before focusing his attention on gardening, growing, and canning vegetables, reading, going to the movies, playing fantasy hockey and strategic board games. He enjoyed getting together with his retired buddies to share stories and reminisce about old times.
Although John never married, he shared in the family life of his closest friends and was honored to be godfather for some of their children. He was well loved and will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name can be given to the charity of your choice. His cremains will be buried at Rose Memorial Park Cemetery, Rocky Hill alongside his mother.
