Joan Alice Potterton, 88, passed at her home of natural causes, on April 12, 2023, four days before her 89th birthday. Born April 16, 1934, Joan spent her childhood and early adulthood in Manchester, Connecticut. In 1953 she married her childhood sweetheart and husband of 68 years, Robert Summers Potterton Sr., and thereupon moved to Coventry, Connecticut.
Joan was a talented interior decorator and passionate landscaper/gardener whose lovely yard caused many a car to stop and tell her how much they admired her flower beds. She used her amazing God- given artistic talents well in the part time positions she held over her lifetime, both at Economy Electric Supply in Manchester, and at Caprilands Herb Farm in Coventry. She cherished family gatherings at the family cottage on Andover Lake and at her backyard pool, her summer vacations at Ocean Park Maine with lifelong friends Jack and Jane Caldwell and caring for her Maine Coon cats.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Robert Summers Potterton Sr., and her two brothers Joseph and William Nevue, and leaves her three children: daughter Dawn Kamay and her husband Robert, son Robert S. Potterton Jr. and his wife Angela (nee Church), and son Glenn Russell Potterton and his wife Patti (nee McTighe). She also leaves grandchildren, Kristen Marie McSweeney, Robert Summers Potterton, III and his wife Carissa (nee Bousfield), Erica Potterton, Ryan Potterton and his wife, Miranda (nee Richardson), Kyle Potterton and his wife Skylar (nee Lawrence), and six great-grandchildren: Alayjah Collins, Odessa Jones, Lauren Williams, Adam Potterton, Kimberly Potterton and Brooklyn Potterton.
She will always be remembered for her love of her family and friends, animals, nature, and all things beautiful. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday May 20 at the Bolton United Methodist Church located at 1041 Boston Turnpike in Bolton, Connecticut.
